Abstract

This article analyzes several aspects of Arthur Burton, the main character in the novel “The Gadfly” by Ethel Lilian Voynich, including intelligence and understanding, idealism and loyalty, originality and faith, courage and leadership, as well as internal conflict and tragedy. Arthur Burton’s internal conflict, moral dilemmas, and commitment ti his work make him a compelling and complex character.
